Vortex interaction in triple flickering buoyant diffusion flames

Triple flickering buoyant diffusion flames of methane gas in equilateral triangle arrangement, as a nonlinear dynamical system coupled oscillators, were computationally investigated. The four distinct modes (in-phase, death, rotation, and partially in-phase), that originally observed candle-flame experiments, reproduced for the first time. interpreted from perspective vortex interaction particularly vorticity reconnection vortex-induced flow. Specifically, in-phase mode is caused by periodic shedding trefoil formed three toroidal vortices; death due to suppression at small Reynolds numbers; rotation appears vortices alternatively shed off with constant phase difference; model two leaving another one anti-phase. This work well establishes bridge between dynamics triple-flame system, which believed play key role understanding larger systems multiple flames.
